Advocacy Update 25 September 2017

Words: Amy on September 25, 2017

Since the project was started in January, by founder Jasper Thompson, we have provided outreach to over 1480 service users; hot food and drinks, food packs, hygiene packs, sleeping bags, clothing, advice and signposting to other agencies as appropriate.

We have also provided short term, emergency accommodation to 29 residents. We were donated a four berth caravan at the end of January, and have now converted three shipping containers for residential use.

Of the 1480 service users we have seen, 16% were ex-service personnel, 12% were female, 16% were Eastern European, 2% South African, 68% had substance misuse issues, 40% had mental health issues.

Help Bristol’s Homeless currently receives no funding, statutory or otherwise, but we are continually applying and are confident that this situation will soon change. We are a registered social enterprise and able to generate our own income and will be opening a charity shop shortly. In the meantime we rely on the generosity of donations from our supporters and thank you for helping us; we couldn’t do this without you.

We are currently based on a temporary site on the Malago Road in Bedminster. We are very excited that we have potentially found a permanent site that we would like to relocate to, and are currently in negotiations with Bristol City Council, who are being extremely supportive.

On this site we would look to have ten residential units, a laundry room plus a kitchen/canteen. The residents would stay with us for a period of up to 12 months, during this time they would be given support to help them deal with any on-going issues, refer to partner issues where appropriate and help them access education or employment. We also have an arrangement in place for move on accommodation when the resident is ready to leave HBH.

Help Bristol’s Homeless is a voluntary project and without your generous donations we would not be able to continue with this vital work.

By making a donation small donation of just £5 you will help enable us to make a real difference to a desperate situation.

Thank you.

– Jasper and the HBH Team.

Reclaim Gift Aid

Gift Aid It!Add 25% more to your donation at no cost to you. A Gift Aid declaration allows Help Bristol's Homeless to claim tax back on eligible donations. It means that for every £1 you donate to Help Bristol's Homeless we can claim back 25p, at no extra cost to you.

By ticking the "Yes" box, I agree I would like Help Bristol's Homeless to reclaim the tax on all qualifying donations I have made, as well as any future donations, until I notify them otherwise. I understand that if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations in that tax year I may be asked to pay any difference. I understand that Help Bristol's Homeless will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid does not cost you a penny more, but can add an additional 25p to every £1 you donate. When Help Bristol's Homeless receives a donation from a UK taxpayer, we're entitled to claim an amount of tax (calculated at the basic rate of income tax in that year) paid on that donation. Once you have given your permission for us to do this on your behalf, there is no need for you to do anything else.

All that is required is that you must be a taxpayer and that would have paid or will pay sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover all the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year. Please note that it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

The amount of tax we claim will be 25% of the total value of your donations in that tax year. Furthermore, if you are a higher taxpayer, you are also entitled to claim the difference between the basic rate which we will claim and the amount of tax you have actually paid. For further details on how you can do this, please contact your tax office. If your tax situation changes and your gifts will no longer be eligible for the Gift Aid scheme please contact us and we will amend your record accordingly.
